Well, I've never found any need to do that either (in fact, I'm a real
wimp about my fingertips, which is my excuse for never learning to
play the guitar <G>). Neither have I ever felt a need to experience
pain to appreciate pleasure--but I was trying to make things a little
clearer for someone.
A former SO was very deeply involved in the BDSM scene. It's amazing
how much you learn just from being around that crowd--and there's a
lot of crossover between it and some of the other subcultures to which
I find myself exposed on a frequent basis (SF/F fans, poly folk,
Mensans, the size acceptance community, pagans, even--gasp!--lots of
computer geeks). I find/found the whole "but why?" thing to be
intriguing, so naturally I'm going to try to explain it as much as I
came to understand it. :-)

I'm usually running with the wolves, and some
days I nap with the cats--but what's with these
people who just yap with the chihuahuas? (Me)

And the SCA: Society for Creative Anachronisms--don't forget them. MANY
of the women and some of the men are quite large; amazing how flattering
period garb is to the fuller figure!
